Lanvin Announces Bouchra Jarrar as New Womenswear Designer

Off the heels of showing its fall 2016 collection, sans creative director, Lanvin has just confirmed that Bouchra Jarrar has been hired as the womenswear artistic director of the venerated fashion house. The fashion world has been rife with speculation on who would fill Alber Elbaz's shoes after the creative director was ousted in October after 14 years at the helm. Early buzz this week was on the Parisian couturier, and now the news is official.

"Bouchra Jarrar is a talented and visionary designer. She is the obvious choice for Lanvin. Her timeless style is in keeping with the style and values of our company, founded by Jeanne Lanvin more than a century ago," said Lanvin CEO Michèle Huiban in a statement. "Her talent, her high standards and her mastery of cuts and fabrics will bring a breath of freshness and modernity into the house, while respecting its soul as the oldest Paris fashion house, a symbol of French elegance."

With more than 20 years of experience in the industry, Jarrar has more than enough qualifications to fill the coveted position. The 45-year-old's impressive resume boasts two years working in jewelry at Jean Paul Gaultier, right out of graduating from the Duperré School of Applied Arts. She then joined Balenciaga and spent 10 years as studio director under Nicolas Ghesquière until 2006 when she became head of couture design at Christian Lacroix. Jarrar started her own house in 2010 and just three years later received her own official haute couture appellation (i.e., she's a true and officially recognized couturier).

"It is a huge honor to continue promoting the Lanvin style, with designs created in the company’s 'ateliers' by teams who possess extraordinary expertise," Jarrar said in a statement. "Joining Lanvin meets a desire to expend my creation to wider fields of expression. It is my intention to bring to Lanvin the harmony and consistency of a fashion designed for women, a fashion of our time."

And Lanvin and Jarrar aren't wasting any time. The designer starts her new job on Monday to begin preparing her first womenswear collection for the house in September for spring 2017.
